I'll never forget the first time I visited Writing on Stone Provincial Park. After a beautiful drive across prairie we dropped into the park and my jaw dropped. I was shocked by the unique rock formations, the silky Milk River, the flowing grasslands and the buttes rising 900m out of the prairie in the distance. A prong horn antelope dashed by in front of the car. I was stunned at the beauty and how it was like nothing else I had ever seen in Canada. I felt a little bit like I was in Utah or Arizona. I spent two days roaming and photographing the amazing rock formations, unique birds, and stunning prairie sunsets. We got an interpretive tour of the history and how how bootleggers smuggled alcohol through the canyons into Canada and where outlaws hid out and the indigenous wrote their stories of battles and hunting adventures on the rock. I loved it so much I have been back many times, exploring, shooting and just soaking up the unique beauty. One time while exploring- I found 4 dinosaur teeth.
Writing-on-Stone- Áísínai'pi to the Blackfoot people- is a quiet gem tucked away in the extreme south of the province, straddling the Milk River. It offers broad ecological diversity, sheltering a diverse population of bird, animal, and plant species. Its riches include the largest concentration of rock art images found on the Great Plains of North America. It is a spiritual place- to the Blackfoot, as well as to others who have discovered it. It's also a place of rejuvenation- a place that reminds us that there are still quiet places, where you can be alone with your thoughts.
